DL-Menthol has short term toxicity in rats.[1]
DL-menthol, D-menthol, and L- menthol can play a role in the induction of surgical anesthesia in fishes, related at least in part to the activation of GABAA receptors, and of rapid movement possibly via cold nociceptors.[2]
Menthol has a fast-acting, short-lived effect of reducing blood flow. Ice reduces blood flow after a prolonged duration, muscle strength appears to be inhibited after ice application.[3]
