Portable wireless electrochemical sensing of breviscapine using core-shell ZIFs-derived Co nanoparticles embedded in N-doped carbon nanotube polyhedra-modified electrode.[Pubmed:38683258]

Mikrochim Acta. 2024 Apr 29;191(5):290.

A core-shell ZIF-67@ZIF-8-derived Co nanoparticles embedded in N-doped carbon nanotube polyhedra (Co/C-NCNP) hybrid nanostructure was prepared by a pyrolysis method. The synthesized Co/C-NCNP was modified on the screen-printed carbon electrode and used for the portable wireless sensitive determination of Breviscapine (BVC) by differential pulse voltammetry. The Co/C-NCNP had a large surface area and excellent catalytic activity with increasing Co sites to combine with BVC for selective determination, which led to the improvement of the sensitivity of the electrochemical sensor. Under optimized conditions, the constructed sensor had linear ranges from 0.15 to 20.0 micromol/L and 20.0 to 100.0 micromol/L with the limit of detection of 0.014 micromol/L (3S(0)/S). The sensor was successfully applied to BVC tablet sample analysis with satisfactory results. This work provided the potential applications of zeolitic imidazolate framework-derived nanomaterials in the fabrication of electrochemical sensors for the sensitive detection of drug samples.

Scutellarin ameliorates diabetic nephropathy via TGF-beta1 signaling pathway.[Pubmed:38656633]

Nat Prod Bioprospect. 2024 Apr 24;14(1):25.

Breviscapine, a natural flavonoid mixture derived from the traditional Chinese herb Erigeron breviscapus (Vant.) Hand-Mazz, has demonstrated a promising potential in improving diabetic nephropathy (DN). However, the specific active constituent(s) responsible for its therapeutic effects and the underlying pharmacological mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the impact of scutellarin, a constituent of Breviscapine, on streptozotocin-induced diabetic nephropathy and elucidate its pharmacological mechanism(s). Our findings demonstrate that scutellarin effectively ameliorates various features of DN in vivo, including proteinuria, glomerular expansion, mesangial matrix accumulation, renal fibrosis, and podocyte injury. Mechanistically, scutellarin appears to exert its beneficial effects through modulation of the transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) signaling pathway, as well as its interaction with the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (Erk) and Wnt/beta-catenin pathways.

Advancements in research on the immune-inflammatory mechanisms mediated by NLRP3 inflammasome in ischemic stroke and the regulatory role of natural plant products.[Pubmed:38601463]

Front Pharmacol. 2024 Mar 27;15:1250918.

Ischemic stroke (IS) is a major cause of mortality and disability among adults. Recanalization of blood vessels to facilitate timely reperfusion is the primary clinical approach; however, reperfusion itself may trigger cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury. Emerging evidence strongly implicates the NLRP3 inflammasome as a potential therapeutic target, playing a key role in cerebral ischemia and reperfusion injury. The aberrant expression and function of NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated inflammation in cerebral ischemia have garnered considerable attention as a recent research focus. Accordingly, this review provides a comprehensive summary of the signaling pathways, pathological mechanisms, and intricate interactions involving NLRP3 inflammasomes in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury. Moreover, notable progress has been made in investigating the impact of natural plant products (e.g., Proanthocyanidins, methylliensinine, salidroside, alpha-asarone, acacia, curcumin, morin, ginsenoside Rd, paeoniflorin, Breviscapine, sulforaphane, etc.) on regulating cerebral ischemia and reperfusion by modulating the NLRP3 inflammasome and mitigating the release of inflammatory cytokines. These findings aim to present novel insights that could contribute to the prevention and treatment of cerebral ischemia and reperfusion injury.

Breviscapine alleviates myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury in diabetes rats.[Pubmed:38422326]

Acta Cir Bras. 2024 Feb 26;39:e390224.

PURPOSE: To investigate the protective effect of Breviscapine on myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI) in diabetes rats. METHODS: Forty rats were divided into control, diabetes, MIRI of diabetes, and treatment groups. The MIRI of diabetes model was established in the latter two groups. Then, the treatment group was treated with 100 mg/kg Breviscapine by intraperitoneal injection for 14 consecutive days. RESULTS: After treatment, compared with MIRI of diabetes group, in treatment group the serum fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, and glycosylated hemoglobin levels decreased, the serum total cholesterol, triacylglycerol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels decreased, the serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level increased, the heart rate decreased, the mean arterial pressure, left ventricular ejection fraction, and fractional shortening increased, the serum cardiac troponin I, and creatine kinase-MB levels decreased, the myocardial tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin-6 levels decreased, the myocardial superoxide dismutase level increased, and the myocardial malondialdehyde level decreased (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: For treating MIRI of diabetes in rats, the Breviscapine can reduce the blood glucose and lipid levels, improve the cardiac function, reduce the myocardial injury, and decrease the inflammatory response and oxidative stress, thus exerting the alleviating effect.

Preparation, Characterization, and Evaluation of Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles in Enhancing Oral Bioavailability of Poorly Water-Soluble Drugs.[Pubmed:38310438]

Curr Drug Deliv. 2024 Jan 16.

BACKGROUND: Breviscapine (BVP) is one of the extracts of several flavonoids of Erigeron breviscapus, which has been widely used in the treatment of cerebral infarction and its sequelae, cerebral thrombus, coronary heart disease, and angina pectoris. But BVP has poor solubility. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study is to develop mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) that can be loaded with a drug with poor water solubility. The MSNs, which were designed for oral administration, enhanced both the dissolution rate and drug loading capacity. METHODS: The use of MSNs as an oral drug delivery system was investigated by SEM, TEM, BETBJH, XRD, FT-IR, and HPLC. Additionally, we examined the oral bioavailability of BVP loaded onto MSNs and examined the cellular cytotoxicity of MSNs. RESULTS: The results indicate that the oral bioavailability of BVP after loading onto MSNs was greater than that of a marketed product. Furthermore, we studied the mechanism by which MSNs enhance the oral absorption of BVP. CONCLUSION: MSNs have the potential to enhance the oral bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs by accelerating the drug dissolution rate.

Breviscapine protects against pathological cardiac hypertrophy by targeting FOXO3a-mitofusin-1 mediated mitochondrial fusion.[Pubmed:38190924]

Free Radic Biol Med. 2024 Feb 20;212:477-492.

Forkhead box O3a (FOXO3a)-mediated mitochondrial dysfunction plays a pivotal effect on cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure (HF). However, the role and underlying mechanisms of FOXO3a, regulated by Breviscapine (BRE), on mitochondrial function in HF therapy remain unclear. This study reveals that BRE-induced nuclear translocation of FOXO3a facilitates mitofusin-1 (MFN-1)-dependent mitochondrial fusion in cardiac hypertrophy and HF. BRE effectively promotes cardiac function and ameliorates cardiac remodeling in pressure overload-induced mice. In addition, BRE mitigates phenylephrine (PE)-induced cardiac hypertrophy in cardiomyocytes and fibrosis remodeling in fibroblasts by inhibiting ROS production and promoting mitochondrial fusion, respectively. Transcriptomics analysis underscores the close association between the FOXO pathway and the protective effect of BRE against HF, with FOXO3a emerging as a potential target of BRE. BRE potentiates the nuclear translocation of FOXO3a by attenuating its phosphorylation, other than its acetylation in cardiac hypertrophy. Mechanistically, over-expression of FOXO3a significantly inhibits cardiac hypertrophy and mitochondrial injury by promoting MFN-1-mediated mitochondrial fusion. Furthermore, BRE demonstrates its ability to substantially curb cardiac hypertrophy, reduce mitochondrial ROS production, and enhance MFN-1-mediated mitochondrial fusion through a FOXO3a-dependent mechanism. In conclusion, nuclear FOXO3a translocation induced by BRE presents a successful therapeutic avenue for addressing cardiac hypertrophy and HF through promoting MFN-1-dependent mitochondrial fusion.

Breviscapine attenuates lead‑induced myocardial injury by activating the Nrf2 signaling pathway.[Pubmed:38125346]

Exp Ther Med. 2023 Nov 22;27(1):26.

The present study investigated the therapeutic potential of Breviscapine (Bre) in mitigating lead (Pb)-induced myocardial injury through activation of the nuclear factor erythroid-2 related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathway. Rat cardiomyocytes (H9C2 cells) were exposed to Pb to model Pb poisoning, and various parameters, including cell viability, apoptosis and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, were assessed using Cell Counting Kit-8, flow cytometry and 2',7'-dichlorfluoresceindiacetate assays, respectively. Additionally, a rat model of Pb poisoning was established in which blood Pb levels were measured using a graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer, and alterations in myocardial tissue, oxidative stress markers, inflammatory indicators, protein expression related to apoptosis and the Nrf2 pathway were evaluated via histopathology, ELISA and western blotting. The results showed that Bre treatment enhanced cell viability, decreased apoptosis, and reduced ROS production in Pb-exposed H9C2 cells. Moreover, Bre modulated oxidative stress markers and inflammatory factors while enhancing the expression of proteins in the Nrf2 pathway. In a rat model, Bre mitigated the lead-induced increase in blood Pb levels and myocardial injury biomarkers, and reversed the downregulation of Nrf2 pathway proteins. In conclusion, the current findings suggested that Bre mitigates Pb-induced myocardial injury by activating the Nrf2 signaling pathway, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic agent for protecting the heart from the harmful effects of Pb exposure. Further research is required to elucidate the exact mechanisms and explore the clinical applicability of Bre in mitigating Pb-induced myocardial damage.

The results were explained based on the surface under the cumulative ranking curve(SUCRA).(1) In terms of reducing major adverse cardiovascular event(MACE), the therapies followed the trend of Xinmailong Injection+conventional treatment(83.8%) > Yiqi Fumai Injection+conventional treatment(57.1%) > Xuebijing Injection+conventional treatment(56.6%) > Shenmai Injection+conventional treatment(53.1%) > Shenfu Injection+conventional treatment(45.3%) > conventional treatment(4.0%).(2) In terms of increasing left ventricular ejection fraction(LVEF), the therapies followed the trend of Yiqi Fumai Injection+conventional treatment(84.0%) > Shenmai Injection+conventional treatment(69.6%) > Shenfu Injection+conventional treatment(62.7%) > Xinmailong Injection+conventional treatment(61.6%) > Shuxuening Injection+conventional treatment(54.8%) > Shenqi Fuzheng Injection+conventional treatment(46.7%) > Shengmai Injection+conventional treatment(45.9%) > Breviscapine Injection+conventional treatment(39.9%) > Danhong Injection+conventional treatment(38.8%) > Huangqi Injection+conventional treatment(38.7%) > conventional treatment(7.3%).(3) In terms of reducing B-type natriuretic peptide(BNP), the therapies followed the trend of Xinmailong Injection+conventional treatment(98.6%) > Shenmai Injection+conventional treatment(57.7%) > Shenfu Injection+conventional treatment(52.5%) > Shengmai Injection+conventional treatment(30.1%) > conventional treatment(11.0%).(4) In terms of reducing cardiac troponin Ⅰ(cTnⅠ), the therapies followed the trend of Shenmai Injection+conventional treatment(92.3%) > Yiqi Fumai Injection+conventional treatment(61.5%) > Shenfu Injection+conventional treatment(51.2%) > Shengmai Injection+conventional treatment(48.1%) > Xinmailong Injection+conventional treatment(26.6%) > conventional treatment(20.3%).(5) In terms of reducing high-sensitivity C-reactive protein(hs-CRP), the therapies followed the trend of Shenmai Injection+conventional treatment(79.9%) > Xinmailong Injection+conventional treatment(68.1%) > Shenfu Injection+conventional treatment(63.1%) > Xuebijing Injection+conventional treatment(56.7%) > Shengmai Injection+conventional treatment(51.1%) > Shenqi Fuzheng Injection+conventional treatment(42.8%) > Huangqi Injection+conventional treatment(34.7%) > conventional treatment(3.5%).(6) A total of 22 RCTs reported the occurrence of adverse reactions, mainly involving the damage of the circulatory system, digestive system, and coagulation function. The current evidence suggested that Xinmailong Injection+conventional treatment may have the best therapeutic effect in reducing MACE and BNP; Yiqi Fumai Injection+conventional treatment may be the best in increasing LVEF; Shenmai Injection+conventional treatment may be the best in reducing cTnI and hs-CRP. The safety needs further quantitative research and analysis. However, more high-quality RCT is required to validate the above conclusions due to limitations in the quality and quantity of the included studies.

Study on the anti-mitochondrial apoptosis mechanism of Erigeron breviscapus injection based on UPLC-Q-TOF-MS metabolomics and molecular docking in rats with cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury.[Pubmed:37827296]

J Ethnopharmacol. 2024 Jan 30;319(Pt 2):117310.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Erigeron breviscapus is a common medicine of eight ethnic minorities, including Miao, Naxi, and Yi. As early as the Ming Dynasty (AD 1368-1644), Lanmao's Materia Medica of Southern Yunnan (AD 1436) recorded that the medicine is used for the treatment of "Zuo tan you huan." In modern pharmacological research, Erigeron breviscapus injection is the most commonly used preparation in the treatment of ischemic stroke caused by acute cerebral infarction, but its mechanism of action in the treatment of ischemic stroke is not well understood. AIM OF THE STUDY: In this study, a metabonomics study based on ultraperformance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF-MS) was used in investigating the effect of a traditional Chinese medicine preparation Erigeron breviscapus injection on the rat model of focal cerebral ischemia-reperfusion and the affinity of its main components with the targets of mitochondrial apoptotic pathways. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study used molecular docking technology to verify the effective binding ability of main effective components of Erigeron breviscapus injection to target proteins related to mitochondrial apoptosis pathway. This study developed a metabonomics method based on the ultra-performance liquid chromatography combined with quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC Q-TOF MS) to evaluate the efficacy and study the mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine preparation. With pattern recognition analysis (principal component analysis and partial least squares-discriminate analysis) of urinary metabolites, a clear separation of focal cerebral ischemia-reperfusion model group and healthy control group was achieved. RESULTS: Erigeron breviscapus injection can significantly reduce the area of cerebral infarction, improve tissue morphological lesion in rats, and can increase the number of Nissl bodies. It may be a promoting factor by inhibiting hippocampal nerve cell apoptosis and Bax protein expression and by exerting effects against ischemia reperfusion after the induction of apoptosis. Thus, it plays a role in brain protection. Moreover, it can considerably promote the recovery of neurological deficiency signs in advance. Meanwhile, Erigeron breviscapus decreased malondialdehyde content and T-NOS activity. Its curative effect from strong to weak order: low dose > high dose > medium dose. The representative components of Erigeron breviscapus have good affinity with the active sites of mitochondrial apoptosis-related proteins. Metabolomics found that the potential biomarkers regulated by Breviscapine are kynurequinolinic acid, succinylornithine, and leucine proline. It is speculated that it may participate in TRP-kynurequinolinic acid and succinylornithine-urea cycle-NO metabolic pathways. CONCLUSIONS: This paper revealed the potential biomarkers and metabolic pathways regulated by Erigeron breviscapus. It was speculated that the mechanism is related to its inhibition of mitochondrion-mediated apoptosis. Erigeron breviscapus could restore the metabolic profiles of the model animals to normal animal levels. The mechanism may be related to the potential biomarkers of quinolinic acid, succinylornithine, and leucine proline and the metabolic pathways involved. However, the exact mechanism by which Erigeron breviscapus inhibits mitochondrion-mediated apoptosis remains to be further explored.

Identification of m(6)A methylation-related genes in cerebral ischaemia‒reperfusion of Breviscapus therapy based on bioinformatics methods.[Pubmed:37670341]

BMC Med Genomics. 2023 Sep 5;16(1):210.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral ischaemia‒reperfusion (I/R) frequently causes late-onset neuronal damage. Breviscapine promotes autophagy in microvascular endothelial cells in I/R and can inhibit oxidative damage and apoptosis. However, the mediation mechanism of Breviscapine on neuronal cell death is unclear. METHODS: First, transcriptome sequencing was performed on three groups of mice: the neuronal normal group (Control group), the oxygen-glucose deprivation/ reoxygenation group (OGD/R group) and the Breviscapine administration group (Therapy group). Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the OGD/R and control groups and between the Therapy and OGD/R groups were obtained by the limma package. N(6)-methyladenosine (m(6)A) methylation-related DEGs were selected by Pearson correlation analysis. Then, prediction and confirmation of drug targets were performed by Swiss Target Prediction and UniProt Knowledgebase (UniProtKB) database, and key genes were obtained by Pearson correlation analysis between m(6)A-related DEGs and drug target genes. Next, gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) and Ingenuity pathway analysis (IPA) were used to obtain the pathways of key genes. Finally, a circRNA-miRNA‒mRNA network was constructed based on the mRNAs, circRNAs and miRNAs. RESULTS: A total of 2250 DEGs between the OGD/R and control groups and 757 DEGs between the Therapy and OGD/R groups were selected by differential analysis. A total of 7 m(6)A-related DEGs, including Arl4d, Gm10653, Gm1113, Kcns3, Olfml2a, Stk26 and Tfcp2l1, were obtained by Pearson correlation analysis. Four key genes (Tfcp2l1, Kcns3, Olfml2a and Arl4d) were acquired, and GSEA showed that these key genes significantly participated in DNA repair, e2f targets and the g2m checkpoint. IPA revealed that Tfcp2l1 played a significant role in human embryonic stem cell pluripotency. The circRNA-miRNA‒mRNA network showed that mmu_circ_0001258 regulated Tfcp2l1 by mmu-miR-301b-3p. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, four key genes, Tfcp2l1, Kcns3, Olfml2a and Arl4d, significantly associated with the treatment of OGD/R by Breviscapine were identified, which provides a theoretical basis for clinical trials.

Breviscapine reverses doxorubicin resistance in breast cancer and its related mechanisms.[Pubmed:37584258]

Thorac Cancer. 2023 Sep;14(27):2785-2792.

BACKGROUND: Based on the effect of Breviscapine (BRE) on reversing drug resistance of human breast cancer cell line MCF-7/doxorubicin (Dox), the mechanism was preliminarily explored. METHODS: The methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) method was introduced to detect inhibitory effect of Dox alone or in combination with BRE on MCF-7 (M) and MCF-7/Dox (MD) cells, and the inhibitory concentration (IC(50) ) was obtained. Cell apoptosis and Dox concentration was assessed by flow cytometry. The drug resistance multiple and reversal fold were calculated. Western blot was performed to evaluate the expression of Bcl-2, Bax, EGFR, p-EGFR, P-gp, caspase-3, and cleaved-caspase-3 protein in cells. The efflux of Rho-123 was measured by flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy. RESULTS: The IC(50) of Dox on MD and M cells was 16.67 and 0.71 mug/mL, respectively, with a drug resistance ratio of 23.48 times. The IC(50) of Dox combined with BRE on MD cells was 5.62 mug/mL, with a reversal ratio of 2.97 times. BRE greatly enhanced Dox-induced apoptosis of MD cells. Bax and cleaved-caspase-3 (proapoptotic protein) expression were obviously increased, while Bcl-2 (antiapoptotic protein) expression was significantly decreased after BRE treatment. BRE inhibited EGFR activation and P-gp expression. BRE increased the intracellular accumulation of Dox in MD cells by P-gp. CONCLUSION: BRE could increase the MD sensitivity to Dox via increasing Bax and cleaved-caspase-3 expression and inhibiting Bcl-2 expression, thereby promoting cell apoptosis. BRE reversed Dox resistance of MD cells by increasing Dox intracellular accumulation through inhibiting P-gp expression via EGFR.

Breviscapine regulates the proliferation, migration, invasion, and apoptosis of colorectal cancer cells via the PI3K/AKT pathway.[Pubmed:37316553]

Sci Rep. 2023 Jun 14;13(1):9674.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is ranked as one of the most common malignancies with a high death rate. It has been discovered that Breviscapine can alter the progression and development of various cancers. Nevertheless, the function and mechanisms of Breviscapine in CRC progression have not yet been described. The cell proliferation capacity of HCT116 and SW480 cells was assessed using the CCK-8 and EdU assays. Cell apoptosis was tested through flow cytometry, and cell migration and invasion were examined using the transwell assay. Moreover, protein expression was examined through a western blot. Tumor weight and volume were assessed using the nude mice in vivo assay, and the Ki-67 protein expression was verified through the IHC assay. This study discovered that an increased dose of Breviscapine (0, 12.5, 25, 50, 100, 200, and 400 muM) gradually reduced cell proliferation and increased apoptosis in CRC. Additionally, Breviscapine restricted the migration and invasion CRC cells. Moreover, it was revealed that Breviscapine inactivated the PI3K/AKT pathway and inhibited CRC progression. Finally, an in vivo assay demonstrated that Breviscapine restrained tumor growth in vivo. It affected the CRC cells' proliferation, migration, invasion, and apoptosis through the PI3K/AKT pathway. This discovery may offer new insights into CRC treatment.

Breviscapine Ameliorates Fear Extinction and Anxiety in BALB/cJ Mice.[Pubmed:36990663]

Psychiatry Investig. 2023 Mar;20(3):205-211.

OBJECTIVE: In this research, the influence of Breviscapine on anxiety, fear elimination, and aggression and the potential mechanism was investigated. METHODS: Anxiety and locomotion were analyzed by elevated plus maze and open field test in mice. Bussey-Saksida Mouse Touch Screen Chambers were used to perform fear conditioning. Territorial aggression was assessed by resident intruder test. Protein levels were evaluated by Western blot. Breviscapine improved fear-extinction learning in BALB/cJ mice. RESULTS: Breviscapine at 20-100 mg/kg increased center cross number, total distance traveled, and velocity in a dose-dependent manner. On the other hand, Breviscapine at 20-100 mg/kg decreased the immobility time in open field test. In addition, Breviscapine at 20-100 mg/kg increased the ratio of time on the open arm, time on the distal parts of the open arm, and total distance traveled in elevated plus maze. Breviscapine at 100 mg/kg increased the average attack latency and decreased the number of attacks over the last 3 days of resident intruder test. In hippocampus, protein levels of postsynaptic density protein-95 and synaptophysin were elevated by Breviscapine at these three doses. CONCLUSION: The administration of Breviscapine alleviates fear extinction, anxiety, and aggression, while increases locomotor in a dose-dependent manner, which might be associated with its influence on synaptic function.

Improvement influenza vaccine immune responses with traditional Chinese medicine and its active ingredients.[Pubmed:36960292]

Front Microbiol. 2023 Mar 7;14:1111886.

The current influenza vaccines are unable to provide effective protection in many cases, like influenza viruses strain antigenic drift or shift, and the influenza continues to cause significant annual morbidity and mortality. Improving the immune response to influenza vaccination is an unmet need. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and its active ingredients are commonly known to have immunomodulatory properties. We therefore compared influenza vaccination alone or formulated with Astragali Radix (Huangqi in Chinese), and several representative ingredients of TCM, including lentinan (polysaccharide), panax notoginseng saponins (saponin), Breviscapine (flavone), andrographolide (terpenoid), and a Chinese herbal compound (kangai) for their potential to enhance immune responses to influenza vaccine in mice. We found that all these TCM-adjuvants were able to increase hemagglutination inhibition (HAI) antibody titers, splenocyte proliferation, splenic T cell differentiation, bone marrow dendritic cell maturity, and both Th1 and Th2 cytokine secretion of influenza vaccine to varying degrees, and that had the characteristics of no excessive inflammatory responses and bidirectional regulation simultaneously. Taken together, our findings show that Astragali Radix exerts a more comprehensive effect on vaccine immunity, on both innate and adaptive immunity. The effects of lentinan and andrographolide on adaptive immunity were more significant, while the effects of Breviscapine on innate immunity were stronger, and the other two TCM adjuvants were weaker. As the first report of a comprehensive evaluation of TCM adjuvants in influenza vaccines, the results suggest that TCM and their active ingredients are good candidates for enhancing the immune response of influenza vaccines, and that suitable TCMs can be selected based on the adjuvant requirements of different vaccines.
