Celastrus orbiculatus Thunb
Celastrus orbiculatus is a woody vine native to East Asia of the Celastraceae family. It is commonly called Oriental bittersweet. Other common names include Chinese bittersweet, Asian bittersweet, Round-leaved bittersweet, and Asiatic bittersweet. Celastrus orbiculatus is near a tree or shrub, the vines twist themselves around the trunk. The encircling vines have been known to strangle the host tree to death, also true of the American species. The leaves are round and glossy, 2–12 cm long, have toothed margins and grow in alternate patterns along the vines. Small green flowers produce distinctive red seeds. Eleven compounds from Celastrus orbiculatus and their structures were identified as 3β-hydroxy-2-oxoolean-12-ene-22, 29-lactone, 2, 6-dimethoxybenzoquinone, 3-oxoolean-12-en-28-oic acid, 3-oxo-24-norolean-12-en-28-oic acid, 23-hydroxybetulonic acid, vanillic acid, 23-hydroxy-3-oxoolean-12-en- 28-oic acid, syringic acid, oleanolic acid, β-sitosterol, β-daucosterol.
