| Description | 1. Mesuaxanthone A and mesuaxanthone B are two yellow pigments. 2. Mesuaxantbone A and mesuaxanthone B produce varying degrees of C.N.S. depression characterised by ptosis, sedation, decreased spontaneous motor activity, loss of muscle tone, potentiation of pentobarbitone sleeping time and ether anaerthesia in mice and rats; they also exhibit anti inflammatory activity both by intraperitoneal and oral routes in rats. |

Constituents of Mesua ferrea L.—I : Mesuaxanthone A and mesuaxanthone B

Two new yellow pigments, Mesuaxanthone A and mesuaxanthone B, and the known euxanthone have been isolated from the heartwood extracts of Mesua ferrea L. Evidence is presented to show that Mesuaxanthone A is 1,5-dihydroxy-3-methoxy-xanthone and mesuaxanthone B is 1,5,6-trihydroxyxanthone. Mesuaxanthone A has been synthesized.
